John Stezaker has the unique triumph of winning the Deutsche Börse photography prize in London this week without actually taking a photo!
The artist is a collagist who cuts up others pictures to create his artwork. He uses vintage postcards, film stills and images from books to create his humorous and sometimes disturbing work.
Stezaker, who picked up a $30,000 cash prize for his win, was chosen from a short-list that also included Pieter Hugo, a South African, Japan’s Rinko Kawuchi and the US photographer Christopher Williams.
Work by all four artists will be on show at the Photographers’ Gallery in central London until 9 September before travelling to the Deutsche Börse headquarters in Frankfurt.
